About Kevin Menzies
My journey into Papertole began in the early 1970s when my daughters received a Holly Hobbie Papertole artwork mounted on a bathroom tile. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s—after seeing a stunning Papertole piece at a friend’s home—that my true passion was sparked. I was captivated by the intricate detail and depth of the craft, and I immediately began teaching myself, eventually seeking out a mentor to refine my skills. Since 1990, I’ve been proudly teaching Papertole and sharing this 17th-century art form with students across Australia and around the world. Over the years, I’ve welcomed learners from Canada, Greece, Spain, Singapore, South Africa, New Zealand, and many other countries.
Teaching Philosophy
I believe in learning from one another, and I find continual inspiration in my students. I encourage each person to strive for excellence in their craft.
"Aim High – and together we will achieve." International Experience
Through my travels—both professional and personal—I’ve had the opportunity to connect with Papertole artists and teachers across the globe. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for the craft and allowed me to exchange ideas and techniques with fellow enthusiasts. Achievements My students and I have proudly entered Papertole pieces in Royal Shows and regional craft shows throughout Australia. Together, we’ve received over 620 awards in the past 11 years — a true testament to the skill, dedication, and creativity involved in Papertole. Classes & Demonstrations
I regularly run weekly Papertole classes at locations including:
Some weeks, I teach up to seven classes, with an average of nine students per session. In addition, I demonstrate and present workshops at craft shows throughout Australia, often focusing on specialised techniques like feathering and furring. These events are always a joy and provide another avenue for sharing this beautiful craft with wider audiences. Publications & Projects
For those unable to attend classes in person, I prepare detailed instructional materials and develop projects that are regularly featured in both Australian and international craft magazines. I also take on commissioned Papertole work, which is now collected both locally and abroad. Get in Touch
